How meditation can change your life!

Do you suffer from anxiety? Do you worry about your finances, what other people think of you or just about everything in your life? That used to be me. I felt like if I had to give time to my stress & anxiety & every little thing that was going wrong in my life. It became so big and out of control that I suffered from severe depression for 10 years of my life. I had just enough strength to go to work and do the absolute minimum that had to be done. I had 2 kids that had to be fed and clothed so I made sure that happened but not much else beyond it. I spent days in my bed, shutting out the world, turning down invitations with practically everyone. I lost relationships and people. I was down I thought of ways I wanted to die, even contemplated turning in front of a semi more than once. I got to the point I couldn’t even stand to be around myself and I had to find a solution.

My first introduction to the Law of Attraction was from the book The Secret. There were so many stories I could relate to, but one of the biggest aha moments was Lisa Nichols who talked about having to love herself before she could do anything else. Jack Canfield was another one who inspired me because I always wanted to be a writer. I had started and stopped so many books over the years I lost count. They talked about limiting beliefs that stopped them and having to get rid of those before being able to draw the things into their life they wanted.

One of the common themes among these stories was meditation, journaling and gratitude. The one I want to focus on in the post is meditating. It has truly changed my life. Meditating relaxes the mind chatter and brings the anxiety from an 8 down to a 2. When you can relax, so there are so many benefits. Stress can cause headaches, chest pain, stomach aches, raise blood pressure, and interfere with sleeping and much more. According to WedMD, meditation can reverse any condition caused by stress. It lowers blood, pressure, improves heart rate, improves breathing and brain waves. People with sleeping problems are able to relax much better at night.

What I noticed for me is I don’t worry that much anymore. I still have stress in my life- I just handle it much better. I also don’t let the voices in my head take over. You know the ones that tell you that you’re not good enough, smart enough, pretty enough etc. That little liar in your head calms down, which is so amazing. I also noticed I am more relaxed when I drive. I used to get terrible road rage. Everyone was either going too slow, or was up my tailpipe. They didn’t turn fast enough or take their correct turn at a four way stop. I was always mad about something. This is the area that I still have to monitor myself but it is so much better. I don’t sweat the small stuff. If something I was expecting doesn’t happen on time, I’m okay with it and now realize that it wasn’t in the plan to unfold that way. I seem to roll with the punches.

When I talk to people that are having financial problems, they are highly stressed and I totally get it. One of the first things I suggest is relaxation and meditation. We can’t solve problems when we are in a constant state of panic. Our higher self, or aka gut knows what we need to do, but we choke off the answers by worrying. The bible tells us to cast our cares, worry for nothing. Whether you are spiritual or not, science also shows us that stress is very harmful, both physically and emotionally. When we are relaxed and not focusing on the problem, the solutions are able to come into our mind without effort.

I started mediating with videos on You Tube. It is still my favorite place to find meditations, although there are lots of apps for your smart phone as well. Calm is one I have on my phone but I still love guided meditations on You Tube. Guided meditations are ones where someone is talking and either guiding you what to do or focus on or saying mantras, which are like positive affirmation statements. You can also just listen to music and let your mind wander. The goal is to try to relax and not really think of anything, although sometimes I just let my mind go where it will. There is no right or wrong way to meditate. If you watched the movie Eat, Pray, Love you know Liz Gilbert’s character (played marvelously by Julia Roberts) really struggled with meditating. It doesn’t have to be such a chore. Devote 5 or 10 minutes a day and choose a time that works best for you. If you’re a morning person, first thing when you wake up may be best. I like to meditate right before bed personally, but anytime is a good time. There are ones for any topic, like financial abundance or self-love, but just choose something and try it today. You won’t regret it.
